Ithaka Question

Was Penelope's falling in love with Leodes a betryal of Odysseus? Explain why or why not.

  1. Yes and no. Yes because she's still married with Odysseus and is loving another man. No because she was loyal to Odysseus for so long and she was under the influence of Aphrodite, so she didn't really have any control weather she loved Leodes or not.

  2. Penelope definitley betrayed Odysseus. She fell in love and succumed to those feelings for Ledoes. If she had been loyal, she would have waited for Odysseus for his entire absence.

  3. Yes and no. Yes because she technically is still married to Odysseus and should be loyal until she knows for a fact that he is dead. No because she was loyal to Odysseus for a very long time and the goddess of love Aphrodite charmed her to flirt with Leodes so she couldn't control herself.
She needed to have some kind of relations after such a long time of nothing.

  4. I think Penelope both did and did not betray Odysseus. She didn't because she waited years and years for him to come home, always staying loyal to him because she knew he was still alive. But she started to doubt herself and think that he might have found a new wife and forget about her. When Leodes came, she started to fall in love again, but always felt bad, because if Odysseus came home, she wouldn't know what to do. She did betray him though because she gave in to Leodes no matter what.

  5. I feel as thought she definitely didn't betray him. I mean, Odysseus didn't stay loyal to Penelope the way that she did to him for the past 15-something years. Plus, the novel stated that she didn't even look at another man in the way she looked at Odysseus until the suitors arrived. She was also under the influence of Aphrodite, so she easily fell in love with Leodes. Honestly, I was kind of happy that she did, only because I knew what Odysseus was doing on his voyage home. I don't think it was betryal.

  6. Yes and no, Penelope did betray Oddyseus because she was still married to him. No because she thought after a while that he had died.

  7. She did betray Odysseus. She cheated on him with a childhood friend. Even if Odysseus was doing the same thing on his way home from war, that doesn't change the fact that they were still married. However, she was under a spell cast by the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. She couldn't control her feelings for Leodes and therefore had to be with him. So she did betray Odysseus, but not under her own will.

  8. I belive that Penelope stayed loyal until she could'nt do it any more. Eventually the Goddess of Love won. Was this a betrayl in my opinion no. Although she was with Leodes she stayed loyal by not marrying even under Aphrodite's spell.

  9. I think that it was a little bit of both. She tried to her best ability to stay loyal, which she did for a very long time. She did even though she had a feeling that Odysseus didn't. It was not exactly her fault that she has feelings for Leodes. She was under the influence of Aphrodite, and she was getting so lonely, that when a chance came by she took it.

  10. Yes but I do not blame her for it and I don't believe Odysseus would either. He was away for a very long time so it would be natural to give up hope and move on to another man. There was also the part of Aphrodite encouraging their romance that sped up the process so that it happened before it would have without her medling

  11. To be honest I don't think it was betrayal on her part what so ever. Everyone assumed she was a widow and she herself was starting to believe it. It would have been different if she did it in the first year or so. Yet, Odysseus was gone for a very long time. He even slept with someone else. (If anyone doesn't remember, Klymene was told by Aphrodite, I believe) Also, she didn't take anyone into her own bed for so long. It was only a matter of time until she fell in love.
I also believe that if Odysseus was truly dead, he would have wanted her to be happy again and to find someone new to love her like he did. Nobody was certain of his well being. There were no stories to be told, and no body was ever found. Everyone thought the worst except Telemachus and Penelope. Even Klymene had her doubts. So no, I do not believe her relationship with Leodes was betrayal towards Odysseus.

  12. In my personal opinion Penelope was not betraying Odysseus. Yes, she had fallen for another man, but that is only because she was desperate and missed the presence of a masculine figure at her side. I think her mental state was very unstable before she fell in love with Leodes. Leodes brought her happiness, and all humans can not live without happiness. It would be a terrible life to mope around all day and ponder about the one you love. To me, Penelopes love for Leodes was nothing more than a gesture by Aphrodite to re-spark love in Penelope's heart, and to make Penelope happy.

  13. It was definitely some of both. She did, because shes still married to Odysseus and is sleeping with another man. And she didn't, because its been like 20 years since shes seen Odysseus, and even hes cheating on her with Calypso and Circe.

  14. I believe that Penelope betrayed Odysseus but she couldn't help it. For more than a decade she was loyal and was always at the loom. But when Leodes came, she fell for him with the help of Aphrodite. She started loosing hope that Odysseus would return and thought that maybe she should move on. Even when Odysseus came back she still thought of Leodes.

  15. I believe it was a little of both. Even though she waited and waited she still fell in love with another man, but she still truly loved her husband. Also she was under the influence of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. But in the end she stayed loyal to Odysseus for so many years even though everyone said he was dead, and that is true love.

  16. Yes and no. Penelope cheated on Odysseus even after she made a promise to him that she would wait until he got back from war. But Odysseus was gone for so long that she started to doubt herself when Leodes came to the palace. Also Aphrodite meddled with her thoughts. Aphrodite also explained that Odysseus was doing the same thing on his journey, and that Penelope deserved it after being so loyal for all that time.

  17. My opinions on relationships tends to be old fashioned, so I truly and honestly believe that Penelope betrayed Odysseus by having emotional AND physical relationships whith Leodes. I can understand her being and alone and thinking he was dead, but there are ways to get through those times without cheating. In my opinion, she should have sucked it up and truddged on. Even then, when Odysseus came back, she still did not love him anymore and wanted to be with the dead Leodes.

  18. Penelope did betray Odysseus, but not in a malicious way. Odysseus had been gone for a very long time and she had her doubts of him coming back. She became lonely and wanted to confide in someone and Leodes was that person. She did wait many years before she cheated, and she was lonely and under a lot of stress from all of the suitors tearing the palace apart. In the end, though, she did have a relationship with Leodes romantically.

  19. I believe that Penelope was not loyal to Odysseus becasue she had a romantic love with Leodes. She was loyal for many, many years but in the end she did fall in love with Leodes. Penelope didn't even want a husband for a very, very, long time becasue of Odysseus. She was very loyal throughout the whole book and the only reason she would have run off with Leodes is because Telemachus told Penelope that he thinks Odysseus is dead. However, Odysseus was not loyal to Penelope when Penelope was being loyal to him, even though he did come back to Ithaka. I guess they were both unloyal to each other, meaning that Penelope betrayed Odysseus and Odysseus betrayed Penelope.

  20. Penelope did betray Odysseus, no doubt about it. But, Aphrodite did influence Penelope into loving Leodes. Penelope had remained loyal for many years, without even looking at another man. She did have her doubts aboud Odysseus ever returning, but she should have waited until she knew for sure that Odysseus was dead. Now, Odysseus also had relationships with other women on his voyage home, but that doesn't mean that Penelope is allowed to betray Odysseus. And even after Odysseus returned (and all he wanted was Penelope), Penelope longed for the dead Leodes. So yes, Penelope did in fact betray Odysseus.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My answer to this question is yes in some ways and no in other ways. It is betrayal because she is still married to her husband Odysseus, and there is no proof that he has died. But, Odysseus had also been missing for a long time and it is difficult for a queen to rule Ithaka without a king at her side. Also she has waited so long for Odysseus the chances he was alive were very small, so she decided to move on, which is understandable.

  22. I do not think that Penelope betrayed Odysseus because if she had not found Leodes, she would have just kept on deteriorating mentally and I doubt that Odysseus would have liked to see her in such a pitiful state. Falling in love with Leodes gave her a new strength and happiness and I think that what Odysseus really wanted was just for Penelope to be happy while he was absent so therefore she was being loyal to his wishes.

  23. Absolutely. She had an affair with his childhood best friend before she knew for certain that he was dead. And you can't always put your heart above your head-yes, she was lonely, but she also knew it wasn't right. Odysseus was wrong to sleep with other women too...and one of those mistakes actually ended up costing him an extra five years away from home. In conclusion, they were both wrong to do that, and it was betrayal.

  24. Yes and no. I think yes because of her promises to herself to wait for him to return, and the fact that they were still married. I think no because Odysseus was doing the same thing when he was away from Ithika, also Aphrodite enhanced Penelope's feelings for Leodes, so in a way she was betraying Odysseus against her will.

  25. That's a REALLY good question! but i would say no, because she had Aphrodite on her case 24-7 and you can't control who you fall in love with. She had stayed faithful to Oydsseus for so long to the point that she forgot what it felt like to have a man to love in her life. I don't blame her for falling in love with Leodes. Love makes strong people weak and smart people stupid!

  26. I don't really think it was betrayal, given the situation she was in. Think to Chuck Noland in Castaway. He was so detached from the world he created a friend out of a volleyball. Having not had her love with her in such a long time, Penelope fell in love as a sort of coping mechanism. Also, she was basically suffering from severe denial/depression, so cut the gal a break.

  27. YES because she was still married to Odysseous and she devoted herself to him so falling in love with Leodes means she isnt being faithful to her husband. but it also wasnt because she didnt know if odysseous was alive or dead and she couldnt waist her life waiting for something that wasnt there. and she needed someone to come in and take over Ithaka in case her husband didnt return

    ReplyDelete
  28. No, I dont think she betrayed Odysseus. She may be loyal, but she isnt a goddess. She cannot be realistically perfect. She only did what was natural.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Since Aphrodite was causing Penelope to fall in love with Leodes, she did not completely betray Odysseus. In fact, she refused to marry Leodes because she believed her husband was coming back. However, she did spend a lot of time with Leodes that she didn't want anyone to know about. I would consider that betrayal. Also, she couldn't stop thinking about Leodes even after the return of Odysseus.

    ReplyDelete
  30. In an addition to what I said, if anyone else was in her shoes, they would have fallen in love months after he went missing. It is not realistic for anyone to stay loyal that long. So, in fact, we should be applauding her for having an iron will. As the goddess of love Aphrodite said, "A woman can love two men at the same time."

    ReplyDelete
  31. By bringing another man, Leodes, into her bedchamber and being with the man, Penelope betrayed Odysseus. Though Odysseus was gone for so long and everyone believed he was dead, she did not. Or, at least she said she did not. Somewhere in her she knew that Odysseus was still alive and that he would return. If she knew that in her heart, she should not have been with Leodes. It is a lot to ask for, for a woman to stay faithful to a man that may never return, but at the same time, if she knew he was alive, than Penelope should have stayed faithful.

  32. Cheating on your husband is cheating on your husband, no matter what the circumstances are. If she believed that Odysseus was dead, then there would be nothing wrong with it. But deep in her heart, she truly believed that her husband was still alive...yet she has an affair with this man Leodes just the same. Yes, she was under the influence of Aphrodite, but Aphrodite cannot control Penelope's actions. Penelope betrayed her husband, no two ways about it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The book often talked about how faithful Penelope was for so long. But then again, "so long" can only last "so long". If Penelope was truely faithful, the thought of cheating of her husband would have never crossed her mind. But yet again, it could have happend to anyone if put in the position of not really knowing whats going on. Aphrodite played a part in this becuase Penelope must have thought it was alright if a goddess was guiding her thorugh it.

  34. No, she was not betraying Odysseus, because after so long of waiting faithfully, she deserved to be able to enjoy the presence of another man. After all, she thought Odysseus was dead and the only reason Penelope did not marry Leodes was because of her fear of Telemachus's actions.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think she was betraying Odysseus, because although everyone told her that he wasnt coming back, she should have believed he would. Although she did for a very long time, she should have waited for him forever even if he didn't come back.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would say she is kind of betraying him but i mean she has gone without him for 20-ish years and stayed loyal to him. I would say it is a natural thing to do. I do believe if she wanted to she could have married Leodes at any point in time, but she didn't so... so what if she kissed him and did more? she didn't marry him and she stayed loyal to Odysseus in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't think that she was betraying him for 2 reasons. First she was being tempted by the goddess, Aphrodite, and two, Odysseus wasn't faithful to her the whole twenty years he was away. That was probably why Aphrodite put a spell on Penelope, so that she wouldn't so miserable while Odysseus wasn't being a good husband.

  38. Yes, I do think Penelope did betray Odysseus because it would of been okay if she just had some feelings for Leodes, everybody when married still will look at a good looking person from another sex and may wish to be with them, but the fact that she had a physical relationship with Leodes (a childhood friend of Odysseus) crossed the line and should not have been done on her part. I understand that she, at that moment most likely believed Odysseus to be dead and that she could move on, but that is no excuse. Although, she did not completely betray Odysseus. If she really wanted too she could of easily married Leodes at any time throughout the time of the suitors being on Ithaka. The fact that she didn't showed that she still loved Odysseus and still wanted to wait for him. This question is a little confusing because she did betray him in a way, but she did not betray him in a way. If I had to choose between the two I would have to choose that she did betray him though, just because she had a physical relationship with another man. I understand that Odysseus was not as faithful either because he was having relationships with women on his way back, but that still does not really excuse Penelope for her actions since at the time she did not know what Odysseus was doing with other women.

  39. Yes, I think that she did betray Odysseus. She would never had looked twice at Leodes if she fully believed that her husband was going to return. She had made him a promise that she'd believe he'd return before he left so she sort of broke that because of her doubts.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes and no, because she had waited years for a husband that she wasn't sure she would ever see again. However, she had promised Odysseus that she would wait. Also, the Goddess Aphrodite had her under a spell that would help her to fall in love with Leodes, something she could not help.

  41. I feel like Penelope both did and did not betray Odysseus. She did betray him because while she fell in love with Leodes she was still married, yet she did remain loyal to him by waiting for over a decade and avoiding marriage to either the suitors or Leodes, even though she loved him, too. Although she had a physical relationship with another person while she awaited his return, she did not completely devote herself to Leodes. This shows that she still loved Odysseus and trusted that he would keep his promise. If I had to choose a side, I would say that Penelope did betray Odysseus, because she should have remain unchanged as Odysseus did. She should have remained faithful if she believed so strongly that he would return, but, as with everything, she was tempted and due to the fact that she was lonely, she gave into the temptation.

  42. For those who think that Penelope wasn't betraying Odysseus, you are wrong! She was first in denial when the two of them had a "fling" during Leodes' feast. Then she fell in love with him when they had their secret adventures into the forest/vineyard. Then last but certainly not least, Penelope really gave up the second she heard Telemachus say that he believed his father died because at that moment, Penelope had decided she would sail away with her secret lover and never see Ithaka again. Her plans were abruptly stopped when her love died and Odysseus appeared... I wonder how conflicted she was!
